This animated movie of vegetation change at Waterboro Barrens in Maine shows how grassland/heath and open pine communities have declined due to fire suppression prior to TNC ownership. Community boundaries were photointerpreted on recent and historic aerial photos from 1940 to 1991. The boundaries were careful transfered onto a 1:24,000 USGS basemap to ensure proper spatial registration between successive years.
The movie was made by exporting Arcview layouts for each year to GIF images. The images were then assembled into an animated GIF image using a shareware animated GIF program. The movie is used to visualize where and how changes are taking place at the site.
